Kayachikitsa department is considered as the backbone of Ayurveda medicine. It is the first branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda (8 main branches of Ayurveda) which has its uniqueness in dealing exclusively with clinical knowledge of classical and general medicine, several diagnostic tools and various treatment modalities.
‘Kaya’ means body and ‘Chikitsa’ means treatment. Kayachikitsa deals with treating most of the diseases through correction of affected Dosha, Dhatu and Agni. It is concerned towards promoting an ideal health by holistic approach of healing body, mind and soul. Along with holistic approach Kayachikitsa benefits health through Rasayana (Rejuvenation) and Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac) which are useful for promotion of an ultimate wellbeing and healthy progeny.
‘Manasa roga’ is an emerging specialized branch of Kayachikitsa. Manasa roga is otherwise known as ‘Ayurvedic psychiatry’ which treats psychiatric diseases through Ayurvedic principles.
